Dreamt up by aql CEO and founder Dr Adam Beaumont back in 2015, NorthInvest was quick to receive backing from both public and private sector organisations such as the UK Business Angels Association, Leeds City Council, Leeds City Regional Enterprise Partnership and KPMG. Following an impressive start within the sector, NorthInvest was also shortlisted in the category of Best New Entrant to the Angel Ecosystem at the UK Angel Investment Awards 2017.
Fast-forwarding to the present, NorthInvest has begun gearing up for a strong start to Q4 with the recent hire of their first employee.
Jack Culpan joins the not-for-profit taking on the position of Marketing and Communications Executive, working to build NorthInvest’s presence, events, partnerships and ultimately promote inward investment within Leeds and the greater north.
What does your role consist of at NorthInvest?
So what do I do? Well, communication plays a big part in what I have been doing so far at NorthInvest. One of the best ways to build strong relationships, offer guidance, and learn more about the current environment is getting out there and talking to people; so I’ve been doing exactly that.
My primary focus lies within growing NorthInvest’s positioning within the ecosystem in order to better connect both people and institutions, boosting inclusivity. Similarly, events are a big part of that, and I’m working hard to prepare an exciting range that will be exploring various industries (keep an eye out as there’s more to come on this soon!). Aside from that, the marketing side of things can include maintaining the company’s website and updating social media channels.
What’s been the best part of the job so far?
As a result of splitting my time between Leeds and Manchester, I’ve already been able to meet some very interesting people and businesses from both sides of the Pennines. Having been at university at Lancaster previously, I was fairly unaware of the tech scenes in both cities, so it’s been a great experience learning about them first hand.
NorthInvest’s focuses moving forwards
Through recent strategic review within the organisation, it has allowed the board to highlight its current sectors of interest for the near future: FinTech, Health/MedTech, Tech for Good, Digital Media and Cyber. This comes at the perfect time due to now having a dedicated member of the team to promote our chosen sectors amongst Leeds and beyond.
Whilst aiming to primarily engage with northern businesses within our chosen industries, NorthInvest wants to ensure that a strong level of inclusivity and accessibility will always be maintained. As a result, if you’re a business looking for funding outside of these sectors, we’d still love to hear from you.
